Air Handlers

What Exactly Do Air Handlers Do for My HVAC System?

What is an air handler? Most of us have no idea how to answer this question, and as such an important aspect of your HVAC system, it really is something you should know a little about. Continue reading to learn the basics about air handlers and how they work to keep your home optimally comfortable.

The Basics

Simply put, air handlers “handle” the air inside your home! They work together with the heating and cooling components of your HVAC system. Think of it as a delivery system, delivering the air throughout your home. While the main purpose is circulation, air handlers also aid in regulating the temperature of air before sending it throughout your home. Additionally, air handlers have a filter component which the air must pass through, catching and eliminating any leftover pollutants before the air enters your home.

What Does It Look Like?

An air handler likely looks very similar to a furnace in shape. These systems can typically be found in your home’s attic, basement, or a dedicated closet. The air handler consists of a blower motor, air filter, evaporator coil, and electrical components. Each component plays an important role in keeping your home as comfortable as possible.

How Is an Air Handler Different From Other Types of HVAC Equipment?

Air Handler vs. Heat Pump

Air handlers work in conjunction with your heat pump. Heat pumps can heat and cool your home, unlike an air conditioning system alone. Heat pumps transfer heat, and the air handler assists by moving the heated or cooled air throughout the home. Treated air is pushed through ducts and untreated air is pulled into the air handler system.

Air Handler vs. Air Conditioner

An air conditioner is the outdoor portion of your system, while the air handler is the indoor portion. Air handlers help regulate and facilitate the cooling process. A common misconception is that air conditioners cool air inside your home. In reality, air conditioners pull hot air from your home and expel it outside. The removal of heat from the air that enters your home is actually what makes your home feel cooler. Air handlers contain a coil which is used to help cool or heat air to aid in regulating temperatures best.

Why Might You Need An Air Handler?

The overall purpose and function of an air handler is to keep you more comfortable. Think of your air handler as an additional step in the process to keep your home’s air cleaner and much more comfortable throughout the year. There are many different types available, and selecting the right fit for your home and system can make a huge difference. There are varying levels of performance, size, and communicating types.
