5 Ways to Improve Indoor Air Quality In Your Home

Think you’re safe from pollutants inside your home? Think again. While you may think you’re leaving behind dust, allergens, and other airborne pollutants when entering your home, the truth is the air in your home could be five times less healthy than the air outside. In Pensacola, homes often experience issues with high humidity that leads to mold growth. However, there are ways you can improve indoor air quality in your home by decreasing dust, mold, pet dander, allergens, and other airborne particulates.

1. Clean the House Regularly

Regular cleaning does a great number on improving indoor air quality quickly. At least once a week you should vacuum and sweep the floors in your home (more often if you have pets that shed). You should also dust regularly to prevent buildup that can lead to unhealthy air quality. Dust and wipe down door frames, window sills, countertops, mirrors, and any other flat surfaces where dirt could be lurking. Regularly wash bedding as well, as it can hold dust mites, pet hair/ dander, and other allergens. Lastly, keep clutter to a minimum to avoid mold, dust, and bacteria from getting trapped in your home.

2. Change or Clean HVAC Filters

The air filter in your comfort system blocks unhealthy airborne particulates from circulating through your system and entering your home. Because they serve as a barrier to stop particles from passing through, they often become dirty and sometimes even clogged. Changing your filters regularly ensures clean air is always passing through your system and helps increase efficiency. You’ll want to change your filters every 1-3 months; more often if there are smokers, allergy sufferers, or pets in the household.

3. Inspect and Clean Ductwork

If you’re experiencing increased amounts of dust in your home, it may be due to a loose end or crack in your air ducts. If air is entering your ducts past the filter, dust and allergens are free to circulate through the system and enter your home. If you think your ducts might be the culprit of a dusty indoor environment in your home, call a professional to do a thorough inspection and clean your ducts.

4. Let In Some Fresh Air

Since the air outside might even still be cleaner than the air inside your home, open some doors and windows and let it in! Mild days are the perfect time to turn off your comfort system for a while and get some fresh air. Circulate the air by turning on ceiling fans, and get an air purification system to clean the new air in your home when the heating or air conditioning comes back on.

5. Use An Air Purification System
