To Do Around Pensacola
It’s a great time of year to get outside and enjoy the wonderful scenery Pensacola has to offer. We love staying at home and enjoying a comfortable house, but sometimes getting out and exploring something new can be great fun for the family! Continue reading as we highlight 4 great things to do in Pensacola in November.
1. TARKILN BAYOU PRESERVE STATE PARK
Tarkiln Bayou is open from 8am until sunset 365 days a year. Cost to visit the park is $3 per vehicle and $2 for pedestrians, bicyclists and extra passengers.
The park is located at 2401 Bauer Road in Pensacola, and encompasses over 4,000 acres. The park is home to 4 species of endangered pitcher plants as well as other rare and endangered species.
The carnivorous white-topped pitcher plant is unique to the Gulf Coast and found only between the Apalachicola and Mississippi rivers. Almost 100 other rare plants and animals depend on the wet prairie habitat, including the alligator snapping turtle, sweet pitcher plant and Chapman’s butterwort.
A boardwalk offers visitors a view of the wild and beautiful Tarkiln Bayou. Visitors can enjoy a picnic and then take a hike on the nature trails to observe the rare plants and animals. For a more adventurous outing, visitors can take a day-hike across the park to the Perdido Bay.
2. Pensacola Lighthouse & Maritime Museum
The historic Pensacola Lighthouse boasts one of the most beautiful views on the Gulf Coast. Climbing the 177 steps allows visitors to relive the 163 year history of the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is located at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola.
3. Bayou Marcus Birding Trail
The Boardwalk is built above the Bayou Marcus Wetlands, offering visitors an opportunity to walk through an authentic Northwest Florida wetland ecosystem, which provides spectacular views, and an up-close opportunity to see wildlife that’s indigenous to the area.
The abundance of fresh, clean water, which is reclaimed water from the wetlands, averaging approximately 6.2 million gallons per day, provides water for the large and diverse bird population which includes white tailed deer, Osceola Turkeys, gray foxes, raccoons, rabbits, beavers, bobcats, turtles, otters, snakes, and even alligators within and around the site.
4. Pensacola Museum of History
The Pensacola area’s flagship museum is the Pensacola Museum of History, which is housed in the three-story Mediterranean Revival architecture of the former Pensacola City Hall and was built in 1907.
The Pensacola Museum of History, a highlight of the self-guided tour, is a general history museum with galleries dedicated to both permanent and changing exhibits. The first floor houses the museum store and ticket desk and is a must see for visitors to the area as well as local residents.
