Healthy Recipes – Avoid Winter Weight Gain

As we emerge from the holiday season, it’s likely that you’re feeling it might be time for a diet! The holidays are filled with unhealthy habits including eating more sugary treats and other unhealthy foods, and exercising less often. This is why for so many, winter is weight-gain season. While gaining weight is not necessarily a bad thing, it’s always important to ensure you’re healthy, especially since your physical well-being affects your mental well-being as well! That’s why, in this article, we’re going over some healthy recipes to help you avoid winter weight gain, or get back on track now that the holiday season is over.

White Bean Salad

A perfect way to stay healthy and full this winter is with a delicious white bean salad! This recipe is a perfect combination of protein and greens that is also completely personalisable to whatever your favorite toppings are. To start, you’ll need

  • 1 can (13.5 ounces) of white beans, washed, strained and dried
  • ¼ cup fresh dill
  • 1/2 cup Greek feta
  • 1/4 cup chopped or sliced red onions
  • 1 cup halved red cherry tomatoes

You can also add cucumber, carrots, or any other veggies in your refrigerator to spruce up the salad. For your dressing, you’ll just need to combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil and lemon juice to taste, and any of your favorite seasonings. This light dressing is a perfect substitute for creamier and more unhealthy dressings, but is still delicious! For the salad, simply add all your ingredients together and top with your dressing! The simplicity of this recipe will also keep stress-levels down and give you more time to spend enjoying other things!

Healthy Turkey Chili

A warm bowl of chili in the winter is such a delicious and classic meal. With lots of heavy meats and cheeses, sometimes we don’t think of chili aligning with our fitness goals! However, this turkey chili uses fresh and healthy ingredients that are sure to warm the soul and help you keep off the pounds. For this recipe, you’ll need

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound extra lean ground turkey or chicken (99%)
  • 4 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 1/4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 (15 oz) can dark red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (15 oz) can sweet corn, rinsed and drained

While there are a bunch of ingredients, don’t be deterred! This recipe is very simple to make and will be able to feed the whole family! First heat your oil on medium heat, and simmer your onions. Next add in your turkey and gradually add seasonings until the meat is cooked. Add in your tomatoes, broth, beans, and corn. Add salt and pepper to taste! A great tip to get in your greens with this dish is to use avocado as a topping, and sub regular cheese or sour cream for low fat options!

Sesame Noodles with Chicken

A perfect lunch or dinner that is refreshing for the winter season is this delicious noodle recipe! This is a great meal for the kids and combines the carbs and vegetables you need in your diet! We love using gluten free pasta, or whole wheat as a healthier option. You’ll need:

  • 6 oz fettuccine
  • 2 tsp toasted sesame oil, plus more for noodles
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 2 tbsp warm water
  • 1 1⁄2 tbsp chunky peanut butter
  • 1 1⁄2 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tsp sriracha
  • 2 cups shredded chicken
  • 1 red or yellow bell pepper, sliced

First start by preparing your pasta per the box instructions, and add them to a bowl with sesame oil so that they don’t stick. Next, mix the rest of the oil, lime, water, peanut butter, soy sauce, and sriracha to a bowl and mix until fully combined. Microwave on high for 30 seconds, and continue to stir. Finally, add in your noodles, peppers, green onions, and sesame seeds to garnish! Now you’re ready to tuck in and enjoy this delicious winter meal.
